Baby acne

Babies are prone to acne and skin problems too. Think acne is a problem of the teen-age years? Think again.

Neonatal acne occurs in 20% of newborns, and can appear as white or red spots on the face, neck, chest and back. Scarring is unlikely, if un-scratched. Most neonatal acne resolves within a few weeks or months. Causes are unknown, but in some cases practitioners will prescribe antibiotics or creams to avoid scarring.

This 5 week old newborn, presented with red acne, yellow crusting in the lower portion of the ear, and frequent colic and regurgitation. The acne had begun at 3 weeks old, and had worsened by 4 weeks. The mother had a history of eczema and a history of food sensitivities. It appears likely, that the crusting in the newborn's ear was eczematous, though cradle cap is a likely cause of yellow crusting.

These are the lifestyle and treatment strategies that were applied: Stopping dairy, and two doses of Homeopathic Sulphur 30c.

The following was the time-line.

Day 1 following visit: stopped dairy

Day 4: gave 1 dose of Sulph 30c to newborn. It was followed by mild aggravation.

Day 7: gave 2nd dose of Sulph 30c to newborn, followed by much improvement.

Day 8: 75% cleared

Day 10: Acne 95% cleared. Colic has reduced significantly.

Result: happy baby, happy mom.

Though the cause of baby acne is not fully understood, and there is a great likelihood that the mother's food sensitivity affects skin conditions, frequency of regurgitation, and colic of the baby.

In the mean time, homeopathic remedies are known and frequently used in India, for common conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and such. Relief is gentle, and side effects little to none. Safe for infants, toddlers, breast feeding moms, and pregnant women.
